There are many ways to work on recovery from traumatic experiences. Some traumatic experiences are single-incident events, such as a being in New York on September 11th when the twin towers were destroyed, or a car accident, or even a natural disaster, such as the tornado touchdown.
Other kinds of traumatic experiences consist of multiple traumas, such as multiple deployments in the Iraq war, repeated exposures to death and dismemberment, or even discovery of long-term illness that was the result of environmental exposures (i.e. Gulf War Syndrome, burn pits, hepatitis C exposure to blood).
Childhood trauma, which may consist of blatant physical abuse, and/or sexual abuse, psychological and emotional abuse, or repeated criticism and injury of the sense of self and self-efficacy, can lead to complex trauma and longer-term effects, such as predispose to addiction, anxiety, or depression.
Recovery is possible! Awareness and treatment of PTSD, research and knowledge of both the short-term and long-term effects, and availability of counselors who can help is better than ever.
Building resiliency after trauma entails working through many emotional layers and reprocessing memories that were never processed due to the nature of traumatic memory.
Facing trauma may be difficult at first, but when you begin working with a professional you can develop self-awareness, reflection of your life, and continuity of self that can strengthen you and help you navigate important aspects of your life.
